JAPAN'S KUMADO KODO walking Itinerary

Day 1 29th Sept 2025.

Tour starts in Osaka, where we meet our guide for a full briefing and then out a t a lively izakaya restaurant, immensely popular in Japan. (Dinner included in price)

Day 2. Travel to Mt Koyasan

Our walk, a 7.5km pilgrimage trail around the perimeter of Koyasan that was originally established for women. We then continue to Koyasan’s Okunoin, as inner sanctum that includes an amazing mausoleum. Total 10.4kms today

Day 3. We head mid-morning to the start of the Kumano Kodo trek at Takijiri-Oji to Takahara.

Todays walk is only 3.7kms, but has a steep, but not to long climb to a ridge, walking on the old route, passing Buddhist statues as we walk the trail. Accom: Japanese Inn

Day 4. Takahara – Tsugizakura – Yunomine Onsen – 12.4kms; Accom Japanese Inn

We stay here for 2 nights, enjoying the Onsen at the end of each days walk. Today we have a short climb, cobbled paths, and staircase to Chikatsuys, a small village. Then we climb to Tsugizakura-Oji, famed for its giant cedar trees and a thirst-quenching spring. We then board our waiting vehicle to Yunomine Onsen for 2 nights.

Day 5. Yunomine Onsen – Hongu – Yunomine Onsen – 10.5kms

Today’s walk follows a ridge through verdant forests and isolated village communities. Many opportunities of Panoramic views on today’s walk and we gain our first site of the famed giant torii shrine gate at Hongu Taisha.

Day 6. Yunomine Onsen – Koguchi – 12kms – Accom – Lodge

A Leisurely start today for a late-morning walk up to Hyakken-gura, which provides the most spectacular views of the tour. For here the trail continues a forest track and eventually descends into Koguchi, as isolated village surrounded by mountains and rivers.

Tonight’s accom is the most unusual of the trip; a redundant junior high school that has been renovated into basic comfortable lodgings.

Day 7. Koguchi – Nachi Taisha – Kii Katsuura – 14kms – Accom – Japanese resort hotel

An early start and today’s walk is the toughest of our journey, which includes a 2.5hour walk uphill climb that rises 800mtrs. The walk then continues through forests and along ridges, the path ascending and descending, until we reach the top, from where we can see over the mountains to the Pacific Ocean. Th trail then descends to the Nachi Taisha shrine, Seiganto-ji temple, and the spectacular Nachi-no-Otaki waterfalls. From here we are transferred by vehicle to Kii_Katsuura on the Pacific Ocean and our accom for the evening.

Day 8. Kii Katsuura – Shingu – Isa – 7kms – Accom – Hotel

Today is more relaxed, though still an early start, if you wish to visit the fish market to observe the largest tuna auction in Japan. After breakfast, before taking the local train to nearby Shingu, where the last of the 3 Kumano Shrines, Hayatama Taisha, is found. The final climb of our tour is a short but steep ascent of Mt Gongen to Gotobiki Iwa, a giant rock that is revered as a natural deity.

We continue by train to Ise, home to the most important shrine in Japan. Following exploration of the Geku, the outer impressive shrine, we check into tonight’s accom, before venturing into town for our final evening meal together.

Day 9. 7th Oct 2025 -Ise – no accom – 2kms walking.

Breakfast followed by a visit to the Naiku, Ise’s inner shrine. The tour finishes at noon. Everyone may continue to look around Ise, before catching Trains to our ongoing destination or to Kyoto to spend a couple of nights with me exploring the beautiful old-world city of Japan.
